“Send Me Your Test Report” — The Five Routine Tests That Reveal Whether a Transformer Was Actually Built to Specification

2026-10-28

Certificates and catalogue claims are cheap. Test data is where a transformer’s real quality becomes visible. IEC 60076 defines a set of routine tests that must be carried out on every unit — not sampled, not type-tested once, but performed on the individual transformer you are buying. A supplier who cannot or will not provide complete routine test records for your specific serial number is telling you something important about what happens on their production floor.

The five routine measurements that matter most

Winding resistance measurement at all tap positions. This detects loose connections, broken strands, and contact resistance issues in the tap changer — defects that may not appear until the unit is energized and loaded.

Voltage ratio and vector group verification at every tap position. This confirms the transformer produces the transformation ratio and phase relationship specified, not an approximation.

Impedance voltage measurement. Impedance governs short-circuit current and voltage regulation. A deviation from the specified value affects protection coordination and system performance.

Load loss measurement. This is the copper loss at rated current. It directly determines operating cost over decades. A unit that “meets specification” on paper but tests above the guaranteed loss figure is a lifetime energy penalty.

No-load loss and current measurement. This is the iron loss that runs 24/7 for the entire service life, independent of loading. IEC-oriented specifications commonly cap no-load current at a defined percentage of rated current — for distribution units, values on the order of 1.5% at rated voltage appear in procurement specifications.-22

Beyond these, dielectric routine tests — induced overvoltage withstand and separate-source voltage withstand — confirm insulation integrity before the unit leaves the factory.

Why factory-direct access matters for test transparency

Test reports are only meaningful if they correspond to the unit you are buying and if the factory that produced them controls the testing process. When you buy through a trading company, the test report may originate from a factory you have never contacted, for a unit built to a specification you did not directly negotiate.

Jiangsu Hualai Electric performs routine testing in-house as part of the production flow. Because we are the source factory, test records correspond directly to the serialized unit being shipped to you — and technical questions about test results go to the people who conducted the test, not to an intermediary relaying messages.

Request test data directly from the factory.
